Competitions and events are a great way to get students involved in thinking about Maths outside the classroom. There are loads of Maths competitions and events run across Ireland for students. Here are some which you might like to encourage your students to get involved in.

Maths Week Ireland

Maths Week takes place in the first school term ever year. Over 400,000 people take part in event around the country. You can register your school or class and participate in organised events or get resources to run your own in house activities.

The John Hooper Medal for Statistics

The John Hooper medal for Statistics Competition is run by the Central Statistics Office; the John Hooper Medal is awarded to the best poster designed by students to summarise their findings from a statistical research project they have undertaken. The winning poster represents Ireland at  The International Statistical Literacy Project poster competition.

Irish Maths Teachers Association (IMTA) Competitions

  • The Pi Quiz is a team competition for Junior Cert Students, organised by the Cork Branch of IMTA. Schools can enter 1 team of 4 students each year. Sample questions can be found on the website.
  • The IMTA also run the Team Maths table quiz competition for Leaving Cert students, where questions are based on the Leaving Cert Syllabus. Regional Rounds are held nationwide by local branches.
  • Peter’s Problem is a problem solving competition for Transition Year Students.
  • There is also a 1st Year Competition where the first round of the competition happens within school and successful candidates are invited to regional finals.

The Irish Mathematical Olympiad (IrMO)

The IrMO is a national Mathematics contest for secondary school students. Training for this contest takes place at a number of Mathematics Enrichment centres around the country. The performance of students is used to identify a team of up to six students who will represent Ireland at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), a prestigious international mathematics competition.
